- Condega Homemakers Project is granted non-profit fiscal sponsorship
from MADRE.
- Fund-raisers in Brooklyn, New York and Boston, Massachusetts.
- Distribution of Project literature at Non-Traditional Employment
for Women's monthly coffeehouse in New York City.
- Inclusion of Project flier in Nicaragua Solidarity Network
of Greater New York's weekly mailing.
- Collection of donations and purchase of tools for first brigade.
February 1999
- Brigade I: Lucinda Grinnell, Sonja Hubbert, Pat Humphries,
Margarita Suarez, Sarah Elzas, and Isis Rowan work in Condega.
- Nationally syndicated television program "In the Life"
sends video crew to document the first week of the brigade.
- Articles about the brigade begin appear in the press.
- Fund-raiser concert in Providence, Rhode Island.
March -- April 1999
- Volunteers Jennifer Jacobs and Polly Bay work in Condega.
- Presentations to community organizations.
- "In the Life" segment broadcast nationally on PBS.
- Continuation of fund-raising and outreach efforts.
- Fund-raiser at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
- Benefit concerts by folk singer and volunteer Pat Humphries.
May -- June 1999
- Volunteers Cyndi Wright and Susie Smith join three European
volunteers in Condega.
- CHP receives three substantial foundation grants, exceeding
our goals:
- American Jewish World Service
- Daniele Agostino Foundation
- The Sharing Fund of The Riverside Church.
July -- August 1999
- Benefit in Boston, Massachusetts.
- U.K. brigade consisting of 15 skilled women works in Condega.
September 1999
- Isis Rowan returns to Condega. She accepts a one-year salaried
post to teach building construction in March 2000.
October 1999
- Brigade II: Sonja Hubbert, Margarita Suarez, and Cyndi Wright
return to Condega with new volunteers Sera Bilezikian and Jennifer
Burney.
November -- December 1999
- Decision to continue CHP into the Year 2000.
- Fund-raising and outreach efforts continue.
