View from the plane, before Hurricane Mitch

View from the plane, after Hurricane Mitch.

Much of the Pan-American Highway was washed away by the river.

The damage was so severe, vehicles could not pass into and out of Condega.

The only way to pass was to go on foot.

Before the hurricane, Nery had a big back yard leading down to the river.

During the hurricane, the river rose tremendously, carrying away all the soil and vegetation and carving a deep and dangerous ravine up to the edge of the house. Though the house still stands, its precarious location has caused it to be classified "in danger."

Over 550 houses were destroyed in Condega.

The river totally destroyed entire neighborhoods, leaving behind nothing but rubble.

The Center in Santa Teresa was ruined.

The neighborhood El Culse was also affected.

The tannery in Condega was completely destroyed.

All the bridges leading into Condega were washed away.

This made it impossible for them to receive aid shipments for more than two weeks.

This is a view of Condega before the hurricane.

The same view after.

Another view before the hurricane.
